During the Summer of 2007, we hope to create a library of APRS maps covering Southeast Ohio counties, with emphasis on both WinAPRS ver 2.8.4 and UI-View32 software. Recognizing that both of these software packages and supporting maps are rather large files, and therefore burdensome to download for dial-up internet users, we may also make these products available on CD-ROM.
WinAPRS Maps: These maps are very detailed Census Bureau street level "Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing" (TIGER) products. They are very current, using 2006 data, and fully support zoom, pan, tilt, address ranges, mouse-over place name identification, etc. For convenience of APRS newcomers, we are compressing the 20+ data 'layers' for each county into a single (relatively) compact 'binary' tailored to WinAPRS 2.8.4. These are data files,...not graphics,...and may or may not work with other WinAPRS versions. Due to the work involved, we will probably only create a specific Southeast Ohio County datafile if/when someone requests it (but don't be shy about asking). The following County map packages are available. Be sure to read the README file in each County directory.
UI-View32 Maps: In general, these are graphical products,
and while they may look 'prettier', they are often trickier to obtain and use.
The software author (now a Silent Key) suggested purchasing a companion
mapping package such as "Precision Mapping" to go along with the
software. With a little work, however, you can generate usable maps in a
variety of graphical formats such as GIF, JPG, PNG, BMP, etc.
However, these will be 'static' maps without zoom/pan capability.
There are two Southeast Ohio 'static' maps available below, and we
can work with you to create more if/as needed.
Contact Ted (W8KVK) for information and assistance.
Original APRS Format Maps for most Ohio Counties are also available at the Athens Marathon link on the previous page. Sometimes (incorrectly) called "DOS Maps", these are simple no-frills APRS maps which will run in minimal memory in nearly all APRS software which correctly supports the original APRS map format standard. These are data files,...not graphics,...and can be easily edited with any pure ASCII text editor.
